چکیده

Assessing collaborative problem solving (CPS) is an integrated part of the computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL). We present some preliminary results from a project developed for assessing the CPS using web-based simulation. In the simulation, two participants collaborate via a chat box to complete a task on volcano science. By comparing the responses from 486 individuals and 278 teams (dyads) recruited from Amazon Mechanical Turk, we found the performance from the teams (dyads) is significantly higher than that from individuals. We also find that the item difficulty in the simulation affects both the processes and outcomes of the collaboration.

Automated classification of collaborative problem solving interactions in simulated science tasks

We present a novel situational task that integrates collaborative problem solving behavior with testing in a science domain. Participants engage in discourse, which is used to evaluate their collaborative skills. We present initial experiments for automatic classification of such discourse, using a novel classification schema. Considerable accuracy is achieved with just lexical features. A spee...

Assessing Collaborative Problem Solving through Automated Technologies

Today, proficiency in collaborative problem solving (CPS) is necessary for success in both college and workplace, as well as the ability to perform that collaboration in various settings. At the same time, structuring computer-based CPS assessment, specifically for large-scale programs, is challenging. In order to perform standardized assessment of CPS skills on an individual level, each studen...

Computational Psychometrics for the Measurement of Collaborative Problem Solving Skills

This paper describes a psychometrically-based approach to the measurement of collaborative problem solving skills, by mining and classifying behavioral data both in real-time and in post-game analyses. The data were collected from a sample of middle school children who interacted with a game-like, online simulation of collaborative problem solving tasks. In this simulation, a user is required t...

Collaborative distributed environments for learning design tasks by means of modelling and simulation

The Simulation discipline has to face new challenges such as the incorporation of Collaborative Technologies for professional use as well as for teaching purposes. This integration permits the creation of new kinds of support for collaborative learning processes. In this paper we explore the potential of this synergy with DomoSim-TPC, a synchronous distributed collaborative environment for the ...

The Impact of Doing Problem-Solving Tasks on Willingness to Communicate, Self-perceived Communication Competence, and Communication Apprehension among Iranian EFL Learners

Willingness to communicate (WTC) plays a central role in learning a second/foreign language. The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of doing problem-solving task on learners’ WTC in English. To fulfill the purpose of the study, 61 pre-intermediate learners were chosen by means of administrating a placement test. Learners were pretested through three scales of WTC and its two ...
